What memories to bring back from Puerto Escondido ?
Even if we have our little addresses that we reserve for our cherished customers, here is some information on the little souvenirs that you can bring back from your stay at Puerto Escondido.
The Alebrijes
These small shimmering traditional hand-painted wooden sculptures are typical of the region. They often represent animals. I like it a lot but take the time to compare their manufacturing quality because it can be quite uneven.
Chocolate
The Oaxaca region produces very good quality chocolate. You can buy it in tablet form, in cocoa powder, in paste and in various variations.
Los Tapetes
These hand-woven wool rugs with their traditional designs are popular artisan products from Oaxaca. Among these artisans, the community of Teotitlán del Valle specializes in the production of hand-woven rugs using ancestral techniques. You will find very beautiful ones and even much more expensive old ones.
Pottery
Barro negro pottery in black clay or barro verde pottery in green clay, are a specialty of Oaxacan crafts. You will find a multitude of objects such as plates, vases, serving dishes, bowls and even sculptures made with the same materials.
Ceramics from Santa María Atzompa
Originally from Oaxaca, these are colorful clay ceramics. Dishes, plates, trays, there is a choice. Here too the trained eye will identify the quality – or not – of manufacturing and design. Don’t jump on the first dish that comes along…
Oils
These traditional blouses are worn by women. Some models are decorated with fine and original embroidery. The quality of the work determines the price…
In the same shops or small markets, you will also find hand-woven clothes, napkins or tablecloths with traditional designs.
Mezcal
Oaxaca is known for its local production of Mezcal, distilled from agave (tequila is a derivative of Mezcal). You can buy bottles of different brands and flavors, and even go directly to local distilleries (some can be visited). Note that there are more sought-after “crus” because it’s like wine or whiskey: the worst rubs shoulders with the best… Siete Misterios or Del Maguey are exceptional bottles compared to the rest…
- Our advice: Be sure to support local artisans by purchasing only authentic Oaxacan-made products at local markets or stores.
